Build the product. Leave room for what’s next.
A practical perspective on laying the foundations for a SaaS platform without overbuilding its first release.
Start with a useful boundary
A first release needs a clear purpose. Identify the smallest journey that creates value, then define what sits outside it. That boundary keeps product decisions grounded and helps the team distinguish essential capability from an attractive distraction.
Design for change
Keep business rules separate from interface details and external integrations. Clear boundaries let one part of the application evolve without forcing changes everywhere. Good documentation should explain why those boundaries exist.
Measure before expanding
Scaling decisions should follow observed behavior. Watch slow journeys, recurring errors, and user feedback. A maintainable foundation and a useful product matter more than architecture built for hypothetical demand.
